Thanks for ur reply. They say that it is makrooh because it is too exalted a name to be given to a human. Moreover they say that it is makrooh because arab christians and jews use this name frequently. As far as it being a male name I dont know. I saw this listed under female names in many web sites as well as books.
I need an islamic and authantic clarification on this.

What is Islam.
Waleikumsalam,
Allah says that everything in creation is "Muslim" i.e. in a natural state of existence which is complete and utter submission to the will of Allah therefore Islam for humans is a return to our inner and most natural state of being; submission to Allah. The root S-L-M means both submission and peace: so it is our inate natural submission to God, AND to be at Peace with Allah and our own selves.
Allah ta'ala farmate hain, ke khalq mein har cheez "Muslim" hai -- jiske arabi mein ma'ne hain ta'bedar. Jisko hum "qudrat" kehte hain, vo asal mein "Islam" hai. Lehaza, insanon ka muslim hone ka matlab ye hua, ke ye vo log hain, jo apne androoni aur qudrati tariqe par hain -- yani ke Allah ke mukammal ta'bedar.

The Definition
Islam: ہدایت برایے ہمہ انسانیت. فرق مابین دروست و نادروست. یک نصیحت گران کہ اگر افراد تعاقب کریں , اَنکے تلافیِ خلد برای ہمیشہ, پری رخ حوریاں, و اَنکی آباد باغ جنکے زیر نہر, و خادم جوان اَنکے نیاز پَر کرنے کے لیے امادہ. زنہار اگر نافرمانی انتخاب ہو, سزا تمہاری منتظر ہو. پودےِبا صد خار و زہر خراک, ابر سیاہ سایے, ابِ جوشان تشنگی دور کرے, و آتش تمہاری جلد مکرراً ختم کردے. اسلام ہے فقط یک انتخاب, اختیار تمہاری: گمراہی و ویرانی یا راحت و بہشت. وہ واحد طریقہِ انصاف و ہے یقیناً نجات از دوزخ.
Allah will grant the unfaithful in this world what they desire, but at the end, a painful torment awaits them.
“Then for him who transgressed all bounds, (in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allaah). And preferred the life of this world,Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire”

“As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our paths (i.e. Allaah’s religion — Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allaah is with the Muhsinoon (good-doers)”

جواب کا بہت بہت شکريہ۔ آپ نے اچھی باتيں لکھی ہيں چاہے ذرا مشکل انداز ميں ہی۔ مگر کوئی غير جانب دار شخص شايد اسے معقول جامع تعريف کے طور پر نہ سمجھ سکے۔
Definition of Islam
There can not be a better definition of Islam as given by its Creator.
And that definition is
"LA ILAHA ILLALLAH", There is no god but ALLAH.
This is the most compact I could find.
But as long as the perception for non-believers is concern we can define Islam in two parts.
1) Obligations implied by the Islam concerning Allah Ta'ala. (Haqooq-u- Allah)
2) Obligations implied by Islam concerning society and other fellow beings. (Haqooq-al-Ibad)
First cateqory is only on the authority of Allah Ta'ala.
So the second one implies that
Islam is 'Salamti' itself, as its name means. And in other words it means peace. Peace for every person in the world and peace for every being in the universe. So, Islam intends to create peace through practicing and promoting positive activities and demoting negative activities.

Very true. "LA ILAHA ILLALLAH", There is no god but ALLAH, this is where Islam begins.
I guess it is hard to briefly define a religion. I have been doing a bit of research on this. Although it is not exactly short, but this is what I have come up with:
Islam is submission to the will of Allah. Its message, the Quran, is a social code of law for the whole humanity. This submission encompasses:
1- Faith
2- Actionas (Huqooqallah and Huquooqalibaad as you mentioned).
3- A place to safely and completley follow God's commandments.
1-FAITH
"LA ILAHA ILLALLAH", There is no god but ALLAH.
Along with that we need to have belief in four other things:
the Hereafter, the Prophets (Prophet Muhammed (including his finality)as well as previous prophets), the Quran and the angels.
Faith is not complete without these above five things.
2- Actions
A. Man is required to follow the recipe given in the Quran so that he can improve his personality/soul in order to be able to enter the next level of evolution in the Hereafter.
B. Man is required to gain knowledge in order to harness the forces of nature and make sure that they are used for the collective benefit of the whole mankind.
C. State
But to do all that we need to accept and follow this Code of Law to the letter. This cannot be done unless there is an Islamic society based 100% on the rules given by God. We can individually follow Islam BUT in order to get full results of following God's Laws, peace, prosperity and equality for all, an Islamic state is essential. That is when we will be successful in this life as well as in the Hereafter.
Very true when you say that "Islam intends to create peace through practicing and promoting positive activities and demoting negative activities" .
Sorry this turned out to be a whole article instead of a brief definition. But I believe that anything short of this would not do justice to the definition of Islam.
